Acting in English as a Non-Native Speaker: Tips for Success
Jan 27, 2025
Is English not your first language, but you dream of pursuing an acting career in an English-speaking country? FACTOR is here to support fellow international actors!
Here are some essential tips to help you get started with acting in English:
1. Immerse Yourself in the Language
This might seem obvious, but fluency is key—you need to think in the language you’re acting in. Invest in English classes, work with a coach, or practice on your own by watching films and TV shows. The more exposure you have, the more natural your delivery will become.
2. Learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
Understanding IPA is invaluable when working with accents and dialects. While it can be meticulous and technical, mastering it will give you a strong foundation for accurate pronunciation and accent work.
3. Get a Pronunciation Dictionary
A pronunciation dictionary is a must-have for every non-native actor. For American English, I highly recommend the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary. Combined with your IPA knowledge, it will help you confidently pronounce unfamiliar words.
4. Take an English-Speaking Acting Class
Nothing beats real practice—especially when it pushes you out of your comfort zone. At FACTOR, we offer a variety of individual online classes tailored to international actors. We welcome students from around the world—after all, we’re an International Acting School for a reason!
